ASE PREPARATION: Automotive Gauge
FREE ASE PREP and BAR Specific DIAGNOSTIC Course – Automotive Gauge
Automotive-Gauge or gauges indicate various engine conditions, and understanding these conditions will help you earn your ASE certification in A6
Gauges are devices that indicate various vehicle conditions such as coolant, oil pressure, fuel level, and battery conditions.
However if you have a gauge that is indicating a problem always check the condition of that particular system, before condemning an instrumental panel gauge.
The PCM may monitor the oil pressure switch and send a message to the body control module asking it to illuminate the engine warning lamp on the instrument cluster.
If the coolant temperature gauge or warning lamp indicates the engine is overheating, your first step is to test the coolant system before conducting any electrical problems.
If you ever have a problem with all the gauges being inoperative or giving an inaccurate reading, either high or low or maybe sometimes the needle may vibrate this could indicate a bad Instrumental Cluster Voltage Regulator.
Also most warning lamps aka sending units most of them are on/off digital switches, some late model vehicles are using a multiplexing system for their warning lamps, and some of the diagnostics can be done with a scan tool.
Remember if the coolant temperature gauge or warning lamp indicates the engine is overheating, or the oil pressure light comes on your first step should be in locating the problem are testing that particular system.
